Before and After Plastic Surgery ( 비포&애프터 성형외과) MBC drama offers a new perspective into plastic surgery. A K-drama which is airing in Korea now…Yes, I am watching Before and After Plastic Surgery these days. 3 reasons:1. to kill some of my time.
2. Lee Jin Wook, a new actor which I admire.
3. trying to learn Korean Language at the same time, on my own. Well, Plastic surgery, what a common thing nowadays. I remembered we used to discuss this topic during our Popular Culture lesson - Danny Yeo's class! Some of us agree and some disagree to encourage average or below average looking people to do plastic/cosmetic surgery.Well, this drama sums up everything we'd cover, in 12 episodes! This is a scene in episode 3, after Hong Ki Nam was tricked by an old man later humiliated her in front of his wife, claiming that she was cheating his money in fact he was trying to court her by lending her money. Han Geon Su faced with guilt after being slapped by the girl whom he deceively dated in order to keep her as his client. Their expressions are priceless.

In this drama, Hong Ki Nam is a freshly graduated nurse who just started work at the B&A (before and after plastic surgery) clinic. She is a poor kid, doesn’t have place to stay, and believing that the clinic offer hostels for their nurses, ends up staying at Han Geon Su (the clinic director)’s apartment. Han Geon Su is a plastic surgeon. The clinic has been passed on to him by his deceased father. The clinic is in bad debt because of the father’s “mortgage”. Now, its up to Han Geon Su to try to save the clinic but with one problem. He cannot perform surgery. He faces his old trauma of holding the operation knife (or any knife at all) due to a small surgery mistake that he believed he made. As a result, Dr. Choi Young Woo, a terrific surgeon have to help him conduct surgeries. Unfortunately, Dr. Choi is ignorant about latest trend thus he could not give proper advice wanted by people who undergo the surgery. Personality clash between Han Geon Su and Dr. Choi brings the drama to draw out what are the values of a plastic surgeon. Manager Yoon works at the clinic for a long time and is the peacekeeper and the person behind the stability of the clinic.This is the part 1 of the 1st epi.... Mind you, some of the scene may be disgusting to some of you....
yup...that's right......“disgusting” was the first word that came to mind when I saw the first episode. A grand opening of “live” preview of plastic surgery on the nose. They actually knock some kind of bone into your nose. It’s not just a play-doll clay moulding and wahla you have a new nose. You actually bleed a lot to get that new nose.
So by now, you should understand what this drama have to offer. An insight of plastic surgery: nose surgery, gender change, breast enhancement, botox, eye lid and even the one that can make you seem like a virgin again (vomit).
Clearly, not my field.
However, though this show is about “promoting” plastic surgery, they offer a new perspective to plastic surgery. As Dr. Choi Young Woo of the show puts it : “Each time when a patient come to me and say they want to undergo plastic surgery, I will ask them, why are you doing this? Who are you doing this for?”. Because beauty is what you are, and you are going to live with that unnatural look for your life. “Do not do it for someone else” is the message of the show.
We find that many a times, like breast enhancement and facial beauty, these surgeries are done for their spouse’s sake, or for popularity sake. Of course, if its not for these reasons, its hard to find other reasons to do it. There’s always a realisement (is there such word?) that you are beautiful just as you are.
That’s the main OST of the song. “You are beautiful” sang by 박병무 (another lost unknown singer : remember LSIH OST’s 박영민?) . That’s the song that is playing in the background of the clip above. What a great song, what a great voice.
This drama is aired once a week (what kind of drama airs one episode a week?) on Sundays and have altogether 12 episodes.
